The Bible Society of India released a statement on July 27, 2011 announcing the appointment of the Rev. Dr. M Mani Chacko as its general secretary following the retirement of Dr. BK Pramanik.

Dr. Chacko is the director of the Ecumenical Christian Centre Whitefield, Bangalore. He is an ordained minister of the Church of South India and has served congregations in Kolkata and Chennai and earned a PhD from King’s College, University of London.

Prior to his assuming the Directorship of the ECC in 2006, he was Principal of the Gurukul Lutheran Theological College, Chennai, serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Old Testament Studies from 1990-2006.  He also taught at the University of Serampore and has been a visiting professor at the South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies in Bangalore and the Faculty of Theology, University of Oslo, Norway.

A linguist, Dr. Chacko is well-versed in German, Greek, Hebrew apart from English and a clutch of Indian languages, the press release stated.
